Danny Stein is a high-school senior and class vice president; he's in charge of the prom, along with Camille, his best friend for years. His choices include the sophomore cheerleader he drives to school, a friend of a friend, and a quiet Chinese girl in his classes. With his parents' help (they're going through a divorce), he gets the tickets, rents a tux, reserves a limo, and, over his mother's objections, gets a room at the prom-site hotel. This, everyone believes, is the way to establish memories. Will anything work out?

Carmen (Natalia Verbeke), a young Spanish woman who is engaged to be married, has her hen night at a French restaurant in London. She is invited to participate in the observance of an old custom which allows her to kiss the stranger of her choice before the marriage, symbolically "kissing her single life goodbye" and bringing luck for the future. The man she chooses is Kit (Gael García Bernal) and both enjoy the kiss far more than they have intended. They fall in love, which creates a "love triangle" among Carmen, her fiancé Barnaby (James D'Arcy), and Kit. What initially appears to be a typical urban love story begins to take some surprising and dark twists. In the third act, it is revealed that the circumstances have been arranged in order to create an "emotional snuff film." Unbeknownst to Carmen, she has been cast as the female lead in this endeavor. Barnaby has hired Kit to play a part in the deception, but has misled him by neglecting to mention that he himself, the director, will take on the role of Carmen's fiancé (Kit believing that the couple know nothing of his film). Barnaby is apparently unscrupulous, as he actually marries Carmen for the sake of the film and later fakes a violent suicide (his motive being that Carmen will never love him as she does Kit). In a state of shock, she returns to Kit, who is also horrified, guilty, and never having met the husband, still in the dark as to the true identity of a man he knows only as "Ford." He admits to Carmen that he has been paid by a man to seduce her for his film, and that he regrets it immensely. While Carmen is still there, Barnaby, whom Kit recognizes as his employer, suddenly appears, offering Kit his final pay and removing camera equipment he previously has concealed in the actor's bedsit without his knowledge. With contemptible satisfaction, he unravels his entire plan to the shocked, broken pair and bitterly ridicules them before leaving. Several months later, as the film is about to open, Barnaby appears to have won Carmen back. For a ceremony during which he is to accept a filmmakers' award, he engineers a publicity stunt by which it appears that Kit will have the ultimate revenge. However, Carmen takes advantage of the opportunity to do in her manipulative husband for real while framing his business partners for murder. Tragedy generates sensation and, while its clueless producers (Tom Hardy and Charlie Cox) await trial, the film enjoys a big opening at which Carmen and Kit arrive in style, together.

What Mossad has known is that his now adult granddaughter, Pia Himmelman, has for the past several years lived on a kibbutz in Israel in having followed a former boyfriend there. Menachem also knows that Pia's brother, Berlin residing Axel Himmelman, is coming to Israel to visit his sister, who has contacted a travel agency to hire a tour guide for Axel, Eyal to be that tour guide. Menachem believes Pia and especially Axel as the one still having regular contact with their parents, who are thought to have known Alfred's comings and goings all these years, are the keys to locating and thus bringing Alfred to international court for justice. Eyal's own thoughts are that Alfred is probably dead, and if he's not time is not Alfred's friend in being old and thus will soon die on his own of old age. The problem for Eyal is that Pia and Axel may know nothing, including that their grandfather was a Nazi officer. In meeting the siblings and being able to bug Pia's apartment at the kibbutz, Eyal will discover that they both were told that their grandfather had died shortly after the war. While Eyal does form a bond of sorts with both siblings, he views the job with more disdain as, homophobic, he discovers that Axel is gay. But what may be the key to this mission is that Axel has come to bring Pia back home for their father's imminent seventieth birthday celebration, which if Alfred is still alive, may be too tempting an occasion for him to miss.

London-based actress Anna Kalman has been unable to find love in her life. The reason she came home early from a vacation to Majorca fits into that theme, as the man she met there and was initially attracted to ended up not being who she thought he was. Upon her arrival home, she meets suave Philip Adams, a financier who is a work acquaintance of her brother-in-law, diplomat Alfred Munson. Philip initially states that there is no Mrs. Adams in his life, but when Anna later asks him out, he clarifies that statement in that there is no Mrs. Adams in London, as she is at home in San Francisco. Still, Anna decides to ask him out to the ballet like she had planned. He accepts, letting her know that whatever happens between them, he will never be able to leave his wife. As time goes on, the two fall in love, but their happiness can only be sustained as long as Philip has his Paris-based contract with NATO. So when Philip announces that he is being transferred to New York for five months, Anna realizes that she truly cannot live without him and wants to marry him. Shortly thereafter, Anna learns something about Philip's background that not only threatens their relationship, but leads to a night that Anna wants to give him that he will never forget--and not in a good way. But the best-laid plans have a bumpy road to effective execution.
