Mr. and Mrs. Valduzzi come to see Judge James Hardy for advice on how to prevent the loss of their home. He senses the aged Italian immigrant couple has a grown daughter who is ashamed of her parents and has not kept in contact with them. Failing to locate her himself, he offers money to his teenage son Andy if he can locate her. Andy has been having his usual problems with his car and girlfriends and needs money, so he eagerly accepts the challenge. At the same time he plans to get some girl to enter a school essay contest and split the $50 prize money with her. Since he supposes that a daughter of the daughter might have Valduzzi as a middle name, he sees three high school girls, Euphrasia V. Clark, Clarabelle V. Lee and Elvee Horton, in the hope that one of them is the right one. Not only do they all reject Andy's unethical proposal about the essay, but Euphrasia blackmails him into taking her to the Fourth-of-July fireworks show, which causes him more problems with his jealous girl, Polly Benedict. But Andy finally realizes how insignificant these problems really are when his mother becomes deathly ill with pneumonia.

Jack Carter, a modest, middle-aged bakery owner, thinks he and his family are in a rut. So for the upcoming Christmas holiday, Jack has the brilliant idea to reconnect with his family while also trying to spark his desired writing career by going on a Christmas vacation to a cabin resort in the mountains with no technological distractions whatsoever and make their trip the very best Christmas vacation ever. But the trip seems doomed from the start: their cabin is a dilapidated disaster, the kids are constantly complaining, and then Jack runs into his estranged, uber-competitive friend Robert, who used to vacation at the resort with Jack when they were kids. Robert is rich, successful, and better than Jack at everything. And while Jack and his family stay in a cold, run-down cabin, Robert and his family stay in one of the resort's fanciest newly-renovated cabins. Robert seems to upstage Jack at every turn, and Jack's family appears to be entranced by Robert and his wealth, leaving Jack to feel like a failure. Jack plans to one-up Robert at the very games Robert used to beat him at: the Farthering Pines Winter Olympics, a series of events that Jack's dad invented. But Jack's plan backfires and Robert beats him yet again. Jack has had it. His emotions get the best of him and he apologizes to his family for letting them down as a provider, but they reveal that they think they have the best father or husband anyone could want. Jack finally realizes that the love of his family is more rewarding than anything money could buy.

The singing, rhyming citizens of Hamelin hope to win a competition with rival towns for royal recognition. To this end, the mayor outlaws play (which is a bit hard on the children) and refuses to help a rival town when it's flooded. But rats (seen only as shadows), fleeing the flood, invade Hamelin in droves; a magical piper, whose music only children (and rats) can hear, strikes a bargain which, once the rats are gone, the mayor and council renege on, to their subsequent regret.
