The Last Stand

0 hrs 54 mins

THE LAST STAND for Trees is about saving the world's last remaining ancient forests. Using the flash-point of British Columbia's "Battle for the Trees" at FAIRY CREEK- the documentary examines the importance of keeping intact forest ecosystems: here in North America, the Amazon and around the world. Experts like Wade Davis and Leila Salazar-Lopez speak about the impact trees/plants have on our atmosphere, including Carbon sequestration and providing Oxygen for us to breathe. Incorporating unique-access footage at the front-lines of Fairy Creek protests, to block Logging of the last 3% of BC's old growth, the film does not pull punches. We hear the impassioned words of front-line forest defenders, as well as global forestry experts. The film reveals the complexity of issues facing the world: the need to protect habitat, while balancing economies and jobs, while also recognizing the rights of First Nations' people controlling resources in their territories. Finally, The Last Stand for Trees looks at solutions...both from cutting edge Silicon Valley companies building carbon-retaining technology, to things average citizens can do, to help save jungles/forests and the Planet.

Queen of Hearts

1 hr 0 mins

The name Larissa Swirski (Odessa,1910 - Sevilla,1977), is little known, as is that of so many women who have played crucial parts in history. However, this young aristocrat - related to the Romanov family and settled in the province of Cadiz - played a key part in the web of espionage that was woven in Gibraltar during the Second World War and which was christened Spy Row by MI5. Initially as a spy for the Nazis and later, as she became aware of the genocide taking place, as a counter intelligence agent for the Allies, this glamorous female, who spoke 6 languages, was the inspiration for Ian Fleming to create the first Bond-girl in the film Casino Royale. Married to a military officer, a friend of General Francisco Franco's younger brother, Larissa obtained a pass issued by Eleuterio Sánchez Rubio, a lieutenant colonel in the Spanish government's 'Straits of Gibraltar Information Service', to cross into Gibraltar. There, she carried out numerous reconnaissance missions, accompanied at times by her daughter Liana. Although a mother and her daughter tended not to raise suspicion, on more than one occasion, she was almost discovered. Liana - now aged 88 - helps us to get to know Larissa and to give her the place in history that she rightly merits.

The Presidents: Biden

1 hr 0 mins

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden became the 46th President of the United States of America and, at the age of 78, the oldest president ever to be elected. Taking office in the shadow of Donald Trump, Biden faced a highly divided country and an opposition that viewed him as illegitimate. After four tumultuous years of Trump, voters hoped that his experienced successor would restore peace and provide a sense of calm and steady leadership. Biden promised to be different. Just two weeks after the attack on the U.S. Capitol, he stood on the building's steps for his inauguration and preached about the need for unity and healing. Joe Biden launched his campaign back in 2020 by claiming his mission was to "restore the soul of America", and keeping the nation afloat, mainly undoing his predecessor's work. With that higher mission in mind, the president is both succeeding and struggling to address these simultaneous crises: preserving a fragile democracy and restoring national unity.

Soundies: A Musical History Hosted by Michael Feinstein

1 hr 16 mins

Before MTV and the age of television, there were Soundies. First appearing in 1941, these three minute black-and-white films featured artists of the Big Band, Jazz and Swing era, like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, The Mills Brothers, Les Paul, Cab Calloway, and Fats Waller. The Soundies helped launch the careers of Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Liberace, and Dorothy Dandridge, among others. Viewed for a dime through a special machine called a Panoram, a movie jukebox, these forerunners to the music video could be seen in nightclubs, roadhouses, restaurants and other public venues across the U.S. These classic films remain as glorious time capsules of music, social history, popular culture, and tell the story of a crossroads in our country, when the uncertainties of war, race relations, and emerging technologies combined to write one of the most influential chapters in our nation¹s history.
