Minginui

0 hrs 52 mins

Built in the 40s to accommodate Forestry Department workers, the small town of Minginui in the North Island's Whirinaki Forest lost its sawmill in the 80s as the logging of native forests was brought to a halt and ownership of forestry moved to the private sector. In 1990 the government gifted the land and buildings to Ngati Whare. Now 280 people inhabit the run-down village, living off the land and their benefit payments. Adam Luxton and Summer Agnew's remarkable and disquietingly aestheticised documentary portrait of the town is the antithesis of Florian Habicht's Kaikohe Demolition, interacting only fleetingly with the inhabitants. When there's social activity - a powhiri, the haka before a rugby match, or just kids clambering on and off a roof - these filmmakers evince something like historical distance, framing ritual and play in the eternal overarching melancholy of mist and forest. Theirs is an eerily beautiful picture of torpor, isolation and decay - and of Maori culture enduring on the land, inhabiting the detritus of a western economy.

Assholes: A Theory

1 hr 21 mins

After stumbling upon Philosophy professor Aaron James's titular book, filmmaker John Walker presents theories centered on the type general society classifies as the "asshole". In attempting to define the term, James himself comes up with someone who "allows himself special advantages in cooperative life out of an entrenched sense of entitlement that immunizes him against the complaints from other people". The issues discussed in the film include: the association between narcissism and assholism; the difference between an asshole and a prick or a dick; the prevalence of assholism in men versus women; the asshole culture in Los Angeles and in Canada, the latter known as land of overly polite and unassuming people (with a few individuals, the so-called national sport, and one public sector organization being dissected in the discussion in being contrary to the perception that Canada has a difficult time producing assholes); if being an asshole is a born or learned trait; certain groupings in which asshole behavior seems to be inherent; the effect of electing assholes as leaders of countries, they who usually espouse some sort of populism; the role of the online world, especially tech giants and trolls, in the evolution of assholism; and organizations, especially ones where assholes seem to be dominating figures, taking measures to eliminate assholism in seeing it as a structural problem negatively impacting the organization, including the bottom line. Examples from popular culture are used to highlight these concepts.

Awaken

1 hr 3 mins

(awaken)is an experimental creative film that based on the fish men in my home town to explore the gental relationship between people and nature. the sea has been frozen. And then the flim explored the living situation of fish man through that the fish man has to wait the frozen sea to melt only after that they can go fishing.there is no any dialogue, observing in a cold, single angle. There is a mixture between objective and subjective scence, and the wonderful sound in the working area stimulates audiences hearing directly; every scence in the film may enlarge the feeling between people and things. fish man, his boat, and waiting the frozen sea to melt, multiple perspectives have been used in my work. but in fact, the real situation is more complicated and interesting.

The Forgotten Battalion

0 hrs 55 mins

War is a killer of some of our best and youngest men and women in America. However, not all of the death happens while deployed or at the hands of enemy troops. Sadly, because of their service's impact, many of our young heroes are dying at their own hands. Forgotten Battalion follows the Second Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment, one of the toughest and hardest hit during their tour in Afghanistan. In 2008, 1,200 members deployed to cover a territory the size of Oregon, engaging in heavy combat with insurgent elements with no air support and beyond supply lines due to military cutbacks, they routinely ran short on food, water, and ammunition. Upon returning home, they soon discovered the horror of war and the challenges of surviving were not over. Their suicide rate is approximately four times the rate for other young vets and 14 times the average for most Americans.

1 hr 25 mins

Dedicated to the famed UFO researcher Lt. Colonel (USAF Ret.) Wendelle C.
