Peter von Kant

1 hr 25 mins

French filmmaker François Ozons has taken Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant" and turned the original's fashion designer Petra into the film director Peter, who in turn resembles Fassbinder in all his confusing facets. As in the play, boy meets boy in Ozon's film. This time, however, the aging but still beautiful film star Sidonie (Isabelle Adjani) comes to the apartment of 39-year-old German film director Peter von Kant (Denis Ménochet). She brings 23-year-old Amir (Khalil Gharbia) with her, whom Peter immediately takes to his heart. Peter brings Amir to the cinema and promises to make a star out of him. A difficult, in many cases abusive relationship develops, which leads to emotional sadomasochism. Peter mentally abuses the boy, but the boy finds ways to return the favor. Amir may look innocent, but in reality he is no innocent either. He tries to manipulate Peter, which is not so easy because Peter is an experienced manipulator. Peter also turns the violence on himself, seeming to enjoy destroying his body, mind and soul with sex, drugs and prodigious amounts of alcohol. Peter's abuse eventually extends to Sidonie, his daughter Gabrielle (Aminthe Audiard) and his mother (Hanna Schygulla), who have arrived to celebrate his 40th birthday. And then there is Peter's taciturn assistant Karl (Stéfan Crépon), who suffers the most from the toxic climate surrounding Peter.

H.M. Pulham, Esq.

2 hrs 0 mins

Fortysomething, blue blooded, Boston born and bred, Harvard educated businessman Harry Pulham leads a regimented, routinized life with his wife, the former Kay Motford, whom he's known since childhood. Harry outwardly believes he is all the more happy because of the way his life is, which was somewhat predetermined as part of his upbringing. This day, he receives two telephone calls which make him examine his life. The first is from Bo-Jo Brown, a Harvard colleague who is heading a twenty-five year reunion committee, with Harry foisted into the job of writing attendee biographies, which is to include his own. The second is from Marvin Myles, a former work colleague from his time over twenty years ago at the J.T. Bullard Advertising Agency in New York City, a job that Harry got from his more liberally-minded Harvard friend Bill King. The result of these two telephone calls makes Harry wonder if he is happy, if he is or ever was in love with Kay, and if he never was, would he have been much happier if he stayed in New York with the girl he let get away - a girl, originally from humble means, who was not willing to live what she saw as Harry's blue-blooded life in Boston. In the process, Harry also will find if he can turn back the clock twenty years, or if there is a way to move forward to achieve that happiness which he now realizes is missing from his life.

His crusade gains momentum and he is soon surrounded by an odd assortment of characters: Cy Sedgewick, an American TV commentator who becomes impressed and rallies world-wide support; a U.S. photographer, Abe Fields, who is sent to do a picture story on Morel and stays on to follow his ideals; Saint Denis, a government aide ordered to stop Morel; Orsini, a professional ivory hunter whose vested interests aren't the same as Morel's; and Waitari, leader of a Pan-African movement who follows Morel only for the personal good it will do his own campaign.

As Little Joe is close to death, he is visited by agents of both the Lord and of Lucifer. They make a deal with him: they will give him six months to atone for the errors of his human life. Once back on Earth, he won't remember the deal but both the Lord and Lucifer will be watching over him, trying to get him to see things their way. As both sides try to get Little Joe's soul, they figure that some of the most powerful tools they have at their disposal are the women in Little Joe's life: Petunia on behalf of the Lord, and Georgia Brown, a gold-digging floozy, on behalf of Lucifer. As hard as both the Lord and Lucifer try to get Little Joe on their side, they don't factor into the equation human judgment, which turns some of their work against them.
