Craig is fascinated by the meaning of life associated with this finding. Lotte's trips through the portal make her evaluate her own self. And the confident Maxine Lund, one of Craig's co-workers who he tells about the portal if only because he is attracted to her, thinks that it is a money making opportunity in selling trips into Malkovich's mind after office hours for $200 a visit. Craig, Lotte and Maxine begin to understand that anyone entering the portal has the ability to control Malkovich's mind, which also alters his entire being. This experience makes Maxine fall in love with a composite. This ability to control Malkovich's mind begs the question of the ultimate psychedelic trip for Malkovich himself, who begins to feel that something is not right in the world as he knows it.

Fictionalized account of the life of famed French author Emile Zola. As portrayed in the film, he was a penniless writer sharing an apartment in Paris with painter Paul Cezanne when he finally wrote a best-seller, Nana. He has always had difficulty holding onto a job as he is quite outspoken, being warned on several occasions by the public prosecutor that he risks charges if he does not temper his writings. The bulk of the film deals with his involvement in the case of Captain Alfred Dreyfus who was falsely convicted of giving secret military information to the Germans and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devils Island. Antisemitism played an important role in the real-life case but is hardly mentioned in the film. Even after the military found definitive evidence that Dreyfus was innocent, the army decided to cover it up rather than face the scandal of having arbitrarily convicted the wrong man. Zola's famous letter, J'Accuse (I Accuse), led to his own trial for libel where he was found guilty and forced to flee to England. Dreyfus was eventually exonerated and restored to his military rank.

In Bolivia's Amazon basin, corporate cattle ranches are replacing the rain forest. Doc Ganson, a former con associate, found the mark, lonely widow Gladys Halvorsen worth $2 million, but does not have either the bankroll or the charms to carry out the con on Gladys himself. With Al running interference for him, Nick agrees both to bankroll and carry out the con, he negotiating two-thirds of the take for himself, leaving Doc and his two associates a minimum of $30,000. Although Doc does not like the conditions, he feels he has no choice but to accept the offer as he is desperate for a score to get himself back on his feet. The con is complicated as Nick, using the alias Nick Lloyd, discovers that Gladys is accompanied in Los Angeles by her business manager, Charles Manning, who may be a little more careful than Gladys with her money. Further complications may ensue as Nick is recognized by others who know him as Nick Blake, as Toni comes looking for him to get her own cut in whatever he is doing, and most importantly as Nick and Gladys really do fall for each other. Nick has to decide how to handle the con knowing that a desperate Doc will not let him get away without his negotiated share, a violent Doc who may use harder tactics if he knows that Nick is wanting a life with Gladys and her $2 million.

It's the turn of the nineteenth into twentieth century. Dentist Biff Grimes blames whatever problems he has in life on his childhood friend Hugo Barnstead, assured go-getting Hugo who Biff aspired to be like until they had their falling out. Biff has just once again moved his dental practice into yet another neighborhood, the fact and news of he being an ex-con which seems to follow him from place to place, quickly drying up his patient pool. He blames his incarceration on Hugo. Years ago, Biff was in love with beautiful but self-absorbed Virginia Brush, who he was planning on asking to marry him, but she ended up marrying Hugo who knew that Biff was interested in her. On the rebound, Biff started dating and ended up marrying Virginia's free-thinking, emancipated friend, nurse Amy Lind, who was the fourth wheel in double dates with Biff, Hugo and Virginia. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in June just as Biff and Amy are about to go out for a walk, as do many couples on spring Sunday afternoons, Biff receives a call to perform an emergency tooth extraction, the patient who he learns is Hugo. Hugo, in turn, probably did not know the dentist is Biff when the call was made. The fact of Hugo reentering his life makes Biff not only contemplate what he will do when he meets Hugo again, but reflect on his life, the often unrecognized important aspects which may come to the forefront in this reflection.

Jimmy the Saint's business is videotaping the terminally-ill, so that they will be around to give 'Afterlife Advice' to their survivors. He hasn't been doing too well lately and has had to turn to loan-sharks to accommodate his failing business, as well as his expensive personal tastes. When an evil gangster-overlord buys up his note and demands a favor of Jimmy, in exchange for the interest that he can't afford, Jimmy capitulates. Jimmy is to scare someone for the gangster-overlord--really rough them up. Without giving too much away (spoiler), the scene goes down badly and Jimmy and his crew all end up with contracts on their heads for their trouble.

A community activist charged with the of killing two cops, one of them his ex-wife, is found not guilty due to lack of evidence. The arresting detective takes the judge, jury, and defendant hostage, and decides to have a new trial, presenting the evidence that was not allowed.
