The Man Who Loved Women

1 hr 50 mins

Marianna (Dame Julie Andrews), a Los Angeles based therapist, tells the story of one of her patients, middle-aged David Fowler (Burt Reynolds), a successful sculptor. He originally came to see her due to his sudden impotence in all aspects of his life, including in his art and in his sex life, the latter especially worrisome as he has always adored women in the holistic sense, they in general who adore him right back. David's sessions with Marianna have most often been comprised of him talking about the women in his life, past and present, those in his early life, who included his single mother, who had her fair share of suitors and lovers, and a plethora of prostitutes, one to whom he lost his virginity, and the profession which he has always treated with respect beyond the issues of many women resorting to the business as a last resort to survive. He has moved from one girlfriend or lover to another in his fear that he would miss something special in the women he has not yet met. Those women include, but are not limited to: Courtney Wade (Cynthia Sikes), local on-air television personality who pampers him with her cooking; Agnes Chapman (Marilu Henner), who may have the best looking legs in the world according to David, but who tells David in return that the legs he saw to which he was initially attracted were not hers; Louise Carr (Kim Basinger), the wife of a Houston-based client, wealthy Roy Carr (Barry Corbin), David's sexual encounters with Louise, which are characterized by their riskiness and her canny ability to calculate the time required; and David's assistant Nancy (Jennifer Edwards), the one woman to whom he was attracted, but with whom he had never slept, due to the vulnerable state she was in when they met. Beyond trying to figure out what has caused David's current issue, Marianna has to admit to herself that she too is not immune to his charms. All of these women realize that they are most-likely temporary fixtures in his life, but love him nonetheless. However, one woman may make him feel true love, enough to want to settle down with her.

Don's Party

1 hr 30 mins

Schoolteacher Don lives with his wife Kath and their baby son in suburban Melbourne. On the night of the 1969 federal election, he invites a small group of friends to celebrate a predicted Australian Labor Party (ALP) election victory, much to his wife's dismay. To the party come Don's university mentor Mal and his bitter wife Jenny; sex-obsessed Cooley and his latest girlfriend, 19-year-old Susan; dentist Evan and his beautiful artist wife Kerry--and two Liberal supporters, Simon and Jody. As the party wears on, it becomes clear that the Labor party, supported by Don and most of the guests, is not winning. As a result, alcohol consumption increases and the sniping among Don and his male friends about their failed aspirations gets uglier, as does their behavior toward the women. Mack, a design engineer whose wife has just left him, pulls out a nude photo of her for his friends' approval; crass womanizer Cooley pursues the available women. The disillusioned wives exchange tales of their husbands' sub-par sexual performance. By the night's end, Don and some of his friends have begun to grasp the emptiness of their compromised lives.

M-G-M's first 3-D production shot at a rodeo in Tucson, Arizona is a story surrounded by objects flying into the camera. The story takes place in one day between the rodeo events where bronc buster Gig Young has left his wife, Polly Bergen, for rodeo-follower (i.e., "groupie" for those born since the sixties) Barbara Lawrence. The reconciliation of Young and Bergen is brought about by Harry Morgan (still being billed as Henry Morgan), an over-the-hill bronc buster now reduced to being the show's clown. (Rodeo clowns are usually the most disciplined, most valuable to the welfare of the rodeo cowboys and best-trained of all rodeo performers but Hollywood always showed them as down-and-outers.) Morgan of course has a pretty wife, Jean Hagen, and a little boy, Lee Aker, and anybody watching this film and not guessing who is going to get killed just hasn't been exposed to enough scripts from Hollywood set around a rodeo arena.
