Comic adventure awaits the Willard family when Harry (Fred MacMurray) packs up the wife and kids and sets sail on a long-awaited "dream" vacation to romantic France. However, their trip includes some unforeseen adventures.

Clem Rogers, known as "the Hanging Judge" has come to Stone Junction, Kansas in 1889 to preside over the murder trial of Pete Stone, son of town ruler "Big Tom" Stone. Things are made more difficult when Rogers learns that Joe Rile, the man who killed his father, is working for Stone. The latter, in an effort to discredit Rogers, has his henchmen leave the unconscious, beaten and half-dressed Ellie Irish in his hotel room. On the day of the trial the town slowly fills fills with strangers, all in black and all hired to fill the courtroom. Stone tells Rogers that everyone in the courtroom is related to someone Rogers has hanged and is armed, and defies Rogers to send his son to the gallows.

Bennett's lawyer tries to talk Sherman over, but his Christmas-obsessed daughter Lily and stepmother Lauren counter, so the dirty card is played: documents proving Kris was in a psych ward. Sherman files to be relieved of the case, but is made to reconsider and presents an unusual defense, receiving last minute evidence by chance concerning Bennett's lowly intentions.

Impressed by Helene and the good head she has on her shoulders, Wayne later tracks her down solely to offer her a well paying job as his executive assistant, he not having any ulterior motives in his offer. Despite being suspect that he is only after her as a woman, she accepts. In time, the two form a trusting business relationship, which slowly turns to attraction and love on both sides. But Helene isn't sure if Wayne has truly given up his womanizing ways, especially as some of his past conquests don't seem to want to leave him alone, one in particular, married Agatha Carraway, whose jealous husband, Herb Callaway, a friend of Wayne's, will shoot to kill anyone he suspects of fooling around with his wife. In addition, Helene has to deal with some personal issues that Lita is facing with a man she suspects is much like the old Wayne.

Dr. Clemens discovers that the old mine gives off some strange Phosphorus vapors that may be the cause of the mutation, as well as being the origin for the old legend of a monster that once haunted the area. Clemens puts the Creature in an Incubation Chamber and it's not long before the mutant sheep has morphed into an 8-foot monstrosity, which escapes & terrifies the town.
