That spotlight leads to Emma meeting among others the mayor and his wife, Ray and Fanny Crill, as the train was actually one being used for Senator Wyatt's reelection bid, the Crills wanting to hold a political rally on the train in their backyard, and a young struggling single mother named Maggie Bailey whose two year old son Jake was fathered by John and who was secretly supported by John's mother on the caveat Maggie stay away from him. These issues lead to fissures emerging in John and Emma's life.

Vowing to prove Brick and Joe innocent while finding the real murderers, Mary comes across a small new piece of evidence in at least showing Brick and Joe innocent. However, she is only able to convince one person that matters, Police Lieutenant Everett, who led the investigation into the robbery and murder, of the error in convicting Brick and Joe. As Mary and Lt. Everett go on a search for more evidence, they are in a race against time as once Brick and Joe are executed, any evidence proving their innocence will be somewhat meaningless especially to Brick and Joe.

When his injury does eventually heal a year later, Aimee now wants him to do what makes him happy, which is to pitch. His contract now with the Philadelphia Phillies, Alex's rise in major league baseball with the Phillies and then the Chicago Cubs is meteoric. But some things threaten his career, such as World War I, insecurity about his previous injury, and the resulting turn to alcohol. He'll need Aimee's support to help him through this downslide to his possible redemption.

The corrupt Lord Ambrose D'Arcy (Michael Gough) steals the life's work of the poor composer Professor L. Petrie. (Herbert Lom).
