Santo Domingo Blues: Los Tigueres de la Bachata

1 hr 15 mins

Santo Domingo Blues is the fascinating tale of how Bachata, a music genre once vilified by the Latin upper class as the bawdy ghetto soundtrack of brothels and vulgar cabarets, came to rival meringue and salsa as the preferred music of the Latin world. Through performances, first-person interviews and telling verite scenes with guitarist and guitarist and singer/songwriter Luis Vargas - and his fellow bachateros, viewers are treated to not only a bittersweet success story on one immigrant artist, but an understanding of this once-maligned music style. Following Vargas' poignant journey from New York City back to his hometown of Santa Maria in the Dominican Republic, award-winning director and producer Alex Wolfe tells the story of Bachata's transformation from a "song of bitterness" to an emblem of Dominican national pride.

The Decomposition of the Soul

1 hr 22 mins

Berlin-Hohenschönhausen was no ordinary place of detention. This former STASI preventive prison did not appear on the maps of East Berlin and had the sinister particularity of having as many interrogation rooms as cells. Symbol of the repressive system of the former GDR, its real function was psychological "decomposition". Three testimonies today echo this topology of terror, in the absence of the torturers. "There are always people who say: you cannot change men by force. They say: it's not so sure, we know our job and have a lot of time.

A dramatic presentation of the bomb blasts that rocked Bombay on March 12, 1993, displays the police investigation, amidst allegations of human rights violations, led by DCP Rakesh Maria, in tracking down the suspects, especially Bashir Khan. Bashir managed to elude authorities by re-locating to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and West Bengal, after finally being apprehended in Bombay. His confession and subsequent flashbacks showcases the apathy shown by authorities who refused to intervene during the destruction of the sacred Babri Masjid by Hindu Kar Sevaks, and the inability of the police to fulfill their mandate and protect the vulnerable, forcing many to flee to other locations. The subsequent aftermath that succeeded in irreversibly polarizing communities in Bombay; Pakistan's involvement in training and arms' supplies; the main alleged suspects, Dawood Ibrahim, and Mushtaq Memon, sought refuge in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, while Indian politicians made a cosmetic move to re-name Bombay; and of the little-known plot to assassinate right-winged politicians, Bal Thackeray and L.K. Advani.

The images comprise only of material Sergei Loznitsa found in the Moscow film archives about the siege of Leningrad during the World War II. By providing the originally silent images with a meticulously reconstructed soundtrack, the scenes from everyday life under siege seem to be set in the present. By not intervening in the montage but giving the scenes room to tell a story, the scenes transcend the specific historic events and lead a new life. They do not evoke memories of the past, but become a breathtaking reanimation of reality.

Withdrawal from Gaza

1 hr 33 mins

On August 15th, 2005, the Israeli government began the evacuation, the removal, the expulsion, the disengagement - the withdrawal - of over 8,500 of her citizens from 21 Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip. Young Israeli soldiers and police were faced with an extraordinary mission: the heart-wrenching task of removing fellow Jewish citizens from their homes, schools and synagogues, forcing them to dismantle their farms and industry as well as uproot their graveyards. This 90-minute documentary is less a political film than a chronicle of the last days of a world and a way of life that is likely to vanish, and disappear into the desert from which it sprang.
