Meanwhile, England fell to Uruguay 2-1, and therefore to last place in Group D, in the day's second match. After a deft header from Uruguay's Luis Suarez, England's Wayne Rooney thought he tied the game in the 75th minute, but Suarez would not be stopped, scoring forcefully with five minutes left in the match.
England is all but eliminated after two losses. However, if Italy beats both Costa Rica and Uruguay, and England then beats Costa Rica, they stand a (slim) chance at qualifying.
The day's final match-up between Japan and Greece ended in a 0-0 tie and a whole lot of yellow cards.
Going into Friday, the match-ups include Costa Rica vs. Italy at 12/11c on ESPN, followed by Switzerland vs. France at 3/2c. Rounding out the day's matches is Ecuador vs. Honduras at 6/5c, also on ESPN.
