HBO has picked up the Kate Winslet-starring miniseries Mildred Pierce, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The five-hour miniseries will be directed by Todd Haynes and is based on the James M. Cain novel. Winslet — who won the best-actress Oscar last year for The Reader — will star as the title character, a proud mother fighting for her daughter's approval during the Depression.

Haynes (Far From Heaven, I'm Not There) will also executive-produce the series and adapt the novel for TV along with Jon Raymond. Production is set to start in April.

The miniseries marks the second adaptation of Mildred Pierce. The 1945 film won Joan Crawford an Academy Award. Winslet's last small-screen appearance was also on HBO, on the series debut of Ricky Gervais' Extras.
