Elena and Damon:
Can we say newlywed phase? These two are going at it for a third of the episode (in bed, on the couch, in the hot tub, you get the point!) until Elena (Nina Dobrev) heads off to college (Thank goodness for MiFi!). Although Elena is very into her boyfriend, she can't shake the feeling — or visions — that something is wrong with Stefan (Paul Wesley). Caroline (Candice Accola) tries to take her mind off of both Salvatores by immersing her into full-fledged college life. But plans go awry when they get paired with a not-so-randomly-placed roommate, Megan (Hayley Kiyoko), who just so happens to be stocking up on vervain-laced water. With Elena off at college, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is tasked with keeping everything at home under wraps so she can attempt a real college try.

The Vampire Diaries' Paul Wesley: Stefan is screwed up in the head this season

Caroline:
If anyone has prepared for college life it's Caroline. But with Tyler (Michael Trevino) a no-show at Whitmore, Caroline's plans have gone awry. Not to mention there are clearly people on campus aware of vampires. Caroline wants to get rid of the roommate problem, but Elena convinces her they have to do "normal freshmen-y stuff." Attempting to go to a house party, the plan doesn't really work when they can't enter the house without the owner inviting them in. On their way out, mysterious roommate Megan gets thrown out of the window. Although she is clearly dead from a vampire mauling, her death is covered up with a suicide note. Even weirder? The girls later find a picture of Megan and Elena's dad on her phone.

Matt and Rebekah:
What a summer these two had. Within the first five minutes we see their little threesome tryst in Europe, which  unfortunately ended wiith Matt's (Zach Roerig) Gilbert ring being stolen. Once home, the two have one more hot makeout sesh before Rebekah (Claire Holt) says, "Don't call, don't write and don't you dare miss me." Of all the couplings to end, this is one we're pretty bummed about. But hey, Matt's never been to New Orleans, right? Barely back in town a day, Nadia (the third member of the threesome, played by Olga Fonda) shows up. She returns Matt's  ring, but she is joined by a really scary guy who causes Matt to drop to the ground.

A Threesome! Swoon-worthy Silas! 5 Teases from The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 premiere

Stefan and Silas:
Poor Stefan! It's heartbreaking watching him suffer and drown over and over again. Stefan hallucinates a couple of conversations, the final one with his brother Damon convincing him to turn off his emotions so he can no longer suffer. Elena too appears to urge him to keep his humanity as it's the one thing that makes him who he is. "Please Stefan, for me," she says.  Silas, meanwhile, has returned to Mystic Falls and immediately reveals his true self to Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite Macintyre) by drinking her blood. He explains the whole doppelganger thing, and his aversion to vampires, before compelling the Sheriff to believe she ran into Stefan. But it isn't long before he wreaks havoc on the town.

Bonnie and Jeremy:
Closer than ever, Jeremy (Steven McQueen) is still keeping Bonnie's (Kat Graham) secret that she's dead and helping her carry out the story by crafting emails and texts on her behalf. Jeremy returns to school, saying he faked his death due to drugs and loss, but once there, he's an outsider. One bully in particular starts trouble, and when Jeremy's hunter instincts kick in, he kicks the kid's butt and gets expelled. Jeremy's hunter skills later come to help when "Stefan" touches him and he immediately feels the chill he felt when Silas was near him.

Katherine:
Girl needs a shower. After a summer of wandering the streets, she's now a human hot mess (with blisters!) who's back in Mystic Falls ready to take up residence at the Salvatore house and hide from all her enemies. It doesn't take long before Silas tracks her down and nearly drowns her in the tub. Turns out Katherine is still good for the cure, but it's her human blood he needs. Jeremy takes her out of town to safety, but Silas threatens Damon to get them to come back otherwise he'll never know where Stefan is suffering. Katherine, of course, is not thrilled with this and causes the car to wreck so she can escape. Jeremy nearly dies (for what, the third time?) but Damon shows up in time to give him some blood and revive him.

The Final Five:
Silas interrupts the mayor (Rick Worthy), Bonnie's dad, from his town-square speech. He outs himself and says he's consumed an immeasurable amount of blood to get stronger and stronger. To prove his point he knifes Bennett in the throat leaving Bonnie to scream in horror as she witnesses the whole thing. Finally, Silas tasks the town to look for a girl who looks exactly like Elena — aka Katherine Pierce.
