"Why does everything John touches fall apart?" Elena asks in an upcoming episode of The Vampire Diaries.
We still don't know who John Gilbert (David Anders) works for or why he's really back in Mystic Falls, but Anders swears to TVGuide.com that his intentions for his biological daughter, Elena (Nina Dobrev), are good. But, he warns, "Nothing ever goes well by this guy. He likes to try to convey that sh--'s under control, but it never is, it seems."
Still, he's more a jerk than a sad-sack. Why tell Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) that he is Elena's biological father and that Isobel, Alaric's "dead" wife, is her mother? "There is a reason I've said this to her, to stir up stuff between her and Alaric, in order to get something back from Alaric that is rightfully his," he says. Hmm, maybe it's that ring that protects him? "That will all come to light for a period of five episodes or so. It's a slow burn," he says.
OK, so if John wants to cause trouble with Alaric and he still has ties to Isobel and Katherine, why should Elena trust him? "There's a great scene between me and [Elena]; it will paint the direction that we're headed as far as our relationship is concerned," he says. "I've always described it as Darth Vader-Luke Skywalker-like, [but] I think that's going by the wayside now."
Will daddy and daughter make up? Anders teases that Elena's familial web will only get more tangled in the coming weeks. "There might be a surprise visit from Isobel," he says.
The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on CW.
