Warning: spoilers aboutWednesday's episode of Underground ahead
Underground's fugitive story kicked off in earnest last week, and Wednesday's episode finds Noah (Aldis Hodge) and Rosalee (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) officially on the run. Dogs are hot on their trail, but tonight's episode belongs to guest star (and Smollett-Bell's real-life brother) Jussie Smollett.
Smollett first appeared in last week's episode as Josey, a slave who, due to a misunderstanding, is holding abolitionist couple John (Marc Blucas) and Elizabeth Hawkes (Jessica De Gouw) hostage. While Josey's full backstory isn't known at this time, we do know he believes that John is responsible for selling a loved one into slavery -- which is confounding since John is ardently against slavery and actively working to end it.
Smollett's performance is astonishing: As Josey, he unleashes a fury that's a sight to behold, becoming such a snarling, rage-filled monster you'll completely forget this is the same guy who plays the sweet, sensitive Jamal on Empire.
He takes things to an unbelievable next level as roles are reversed, with Josey committing an act reserved for slave masters. Then, in a chilling climax, somebody in the room dies. Who will it be?
