Apple has released the first trailer for its upcoming streaming drama Truth Be Told just in time for the Aaron Paul hype machine to kick in (courtesy of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), and it looks like he'll be playing another character in a sticky criminal situation.
The Apple TV+ series, based on the Kathleen Barber novel Are You Sleeping, stars Octavia Spencer as Poppy Parnell, a journalist whose articles helped convict a young man named Warren Cave of a high-profile murder decades ago. Paul plays Warren in the present, more than 18 years into his sentence. Now, Poppy is beginning to wonder whether Warren was wrongfully convicted -- and if, by extension, she helped the real killer get away with it.
"I am for truth, no matter who tells it. I am for justice, no matter who it's for or against," she says in the trailer.
Poppy might be on a mission to clear her conscience, but Warren doesn't seem to believe her motives. "You portrayed me as a privileged psychopath," he says. "Now, I live in a house full of men who breathe to lie. And I can smell yours before you even started talking."
The trailer also teases the fishy circumstances surrounding the murder: On the night the victim was killed, his wife (Annabella Sciorra) and two daughters (played as adults by Lizzy Caplan, doing double duty) somehow managed to sleep straight through the attack, and the murder weapon mysteriously went missing. Plus, there's the small matter of mommy dearest burning something in the fireplace and proclaiming, "You have no idea what I've done for my daughters."
Truth Be Told premieres Friday, Dec. 6 on Apple TV+.
