True Detective Seems Worth Watching Again in First Trailer for Season 3

We finally know when Season 3 of True Detective will arrive and it looks like it might be worth the wait! HBO revealed that new episodes will drop January 2019 and released the first teaser for the season, and it actually looks... good? Sure, Season 2 is a pretty low bar to clear but this new footage makes a strong case for giving HBO's gritty anthology another shot. The preview features a criminally great Mahershala Ali as Detective Wayne Hays, a man tormented by an unsolved case involving two missing children.

"This case is more haunting than anything," Ali says in the video.

Season 3, which takes place in Arkansas near the Ozark mountain range, centers on a pair of kids who disappear in 1980. Not much is known about the plot other than that it will take place over three different time periods, as seen in a dramatically aged-up Ali in the trailer. And by the looks of things, Hays' quest to solve the disappearances will uncover even more disturbing details about the case as time moves on.

True Detective's third season has enlisted an all-star cast made up of Ali;Selma's Carmen Ejogo as Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher connected to the two missing children; Stephen Dorff as Roland West, an Arkansas State Investigator whose career has been influenced by a baffling crime; Scoot McNairy as Tom, a father whose horrible loss ties him to two detectives over the course of a decade; and The Good Wife's Mamie Gummer who is set to play Lucy Purcell, a mother of two who finds herself involved in a crime.

The new season will see creator Nic Pizzolatto split directing duties with Green Room's Jeremy Saulnier and Emmy winner Daniel Sackheim. (Here's everything we know about Season 3 far.)

Season 3 of True Detective is expected to arrive in January 2019.
