The ACC/Big Ten Challenge was hardly challenging for the Atlantic Coast Conference until last season, when the Big Ten got the nod for the first time in 11 years, winning six of 11 matchups. The bid for a Big Ten repeat begins with Tubby Smith's Minnesota Golden Gophers hosting Virginia tonight at famed Williams Arena, which featured an elevated court long before it became the norm at football-field venues in March Madness. The improving Gophers have already bagged a choice ACC win by defeating North Carolina 10 days ago in a Puerto Rico tournament. Five more games are on tap each of the next five nights. — Roger Leister

Lightman has been getting edgier and edgier all fall, and as for his work methods, let's just say that the Marquis of Queensbury would probably look askance. So don't expect Boy Scout behavior tonight, when Cal sifts through major family dysfunction as he probes the murder of a restaurateur's daughter. "Don't you even have a heart, Lightman?" asks the disgusted dad (John Amos), who hired Cal. He's terminally ill, as it happens, and that might have something to do with the family squabbling. And the murder. Monique Gabriela Curnen returns as Cal's equally edgy love interest, police detective Wallowski. — Paul Droesch
