Tamron Hall is serious talks with NBC News to become a co-host on the third hour of the Today show.

People familiar with the discussions tell TV Guide Magazine that Hall will be added to the current line-up of Natalie Morales, Al Roker and Willie Geist. Much of the third hour, which airs at 9 a.m., is devoted to a free-wheeling chat among the hosts.

Hall, 43, regularly fills in on Today reading the news and more recently in the "Orange Room," the morning program's segment devoted to trends in social media. She was also part of the Today team's red carpet coverage before the Golden Globe Awards. Ratings for the coverage grew by 12 percent over last year according to preliminary Nielsen numbers. Hall also anchors the 2 p.m. hour on cable network MSNBC and hosts Deadline: Crime, a series on Investigation Discovery.

The Texas native has been looking to raise her profile at NBC News where she's worked since 2007. Hall has met with at least one other competing network news division in recent months. A spokeswoman for NBC News declined comment.

If the deal is made, Hall will be part of growing family at Today, where executives and producers are looking for the right formula to catch ABC's Good Morning America in the ratings. Geist was added to the third hour in October 2012. Carson Daly, who mostly appears in the Orange Room, joined the team in September 2013.
