Today to Broadcast Virgin Galactic's First Commercial Spaceflight

Today will broadcast Virgin Galactic's first commercial spaceflight, which will carry Richard Branson and two of his children, NBC announced Friday. Branson and his adult children, Holly and Sam, will be the first private passengers to go into space when they take off on SpaceShipTwo from Spaceport America in New Mexico next year.

Today will broadcast Virgin Galactic's first commercial spaceflight, which will carry Richard Branson and two of his children, NBC announced Friday.

Branson and his adult children, Holly and Sam, will be the first private passengers to go into space when they take off on SpaceShipTwo from Spaceport America in New Mexico next year. NBC will cover the event on a variety of platforms, including CNBC, MSNBC, NBCNews.com, Syfy, The Weather Channel, in addition to a live three-hour broadcast on Today hosted by Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie.

"Without a doubt, Sir Richard and his children taking the first commercial flight into space, will go down in history as one of the most memorable events on television," Sharon Scott, president and general manager of Peacock Productions, said in a statement. "Through NBCUniversal's multiple platforms and overseas network partners, viewers from around the world will get to experience this where were you moment; we're extremely honored to chronicle Sir Richard's journey and live launch into space."

As previously announced, Lady Gaga will become the first woman to sing in space when she performs from the Virgin Galactic approximately six months after Branson's trek.
