"I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week," Woods said in a statement posted on tigerwoods.com. "I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there."

The 33-year-old golfer blames injuries sustained in his one-car accident over the holiday weekend for his absence from the Chevron World Challenge, which he annually hosts.

"We support Tiger's decision and are confident the strong field and excellent course will provide an exciting week of competition," said Greg McLaughlin, president of the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Woods also cleared his schedule of any other 2009 golf events, but plans to "return to action" next year. He didn't specify when.

Meantime, questions continue to swirl around the links superstar, who will manage to avoid the cameras and media covering the event.
