When The X-Files returns for its 10th season, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) will have broken up. This news has obviously devastated many fans, but creator Chris Carter tells TVGuide.com that it was important for him to "be honest about where I felt the characters would be" seven years later.

But while Carter defends breaking up the beloved couple, he also has a message of hope for Mulder and Scully shippers. "There's always the possibility that they will patch up their differences," he teases.

See what else The X-Files creator has to say about Mulder and Scully's relationship in the video above.

The X-Files returns Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10/9c on Fox.
