The Walking Dead Exclusive: Rick and Michonne Say Farewell to Alexandria

They're leaving home for good

It's a season of farewells on The Walking Dead. In the midseason premiere, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) buried Carl (Chandler Riggs). And in this Sunday's episode, "The Lost and the Plunderers," they'll say goodbye to the Alexandria Safe Zone, which had been their home for longer than anywhere else and was firebombed into oblivion by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the Saviors in "How It's Gotta Be."

In this exclusive clip, Rick and Michonne are preparing to take their leave of a place where not all their memories are painful ones -- their romantic relationship started there, after all -- but Michonne's not quite ready to let Carl go. As the community is being overrun by walkers, Michonne notices a burning gazebo and tells Rick that's where Carl used to sit.

Rick brushes the memory off and says they need to go, but Michonne grabs a fire extinguisher and runs to put the gazebo fire out. Rick winds up joining her as the walkers approach closer and closer. Is this sentimental gesture worth risking their safety? No, but they have to do it. For Carl.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
