You tune in to Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionistsfor the hot stars, murder, and intrigue, but Wednesday's episode served up a giant dose of heartbreak as well. Alison (Sasha Pieterse) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) are divorced.
Yes, that's right, Emison is officially splitsville. We've known since before the season started that Emison was on the rocks, but this nail in the coffin of their relationship was a bit of a shock. It started with Alison ignoring Emily's text messages and voicemails, and then getting a mysterious package from a Rosewood family law firm. Finally, we saw Alison send an e-mail to her ex (sob) apologizing and explaining that the last step has been hard for her — then she signed the divorce papers and treated herself to a glass of wine.
We can't lie, this hurts. When Alison and Emily got together at the end of Pretty Little Liars, it seemed like they had the perfect little family. However, something big had to happen to them for The Perfectionists to survive. There's no way Alison could maintain a long-distance relationship from across the country in any way that would be satisfying to the fans. Even with on-screen texting or alluded to phone calls, it wouldn't do justice for the Emison lovers.
Alison is clearly going to need some time to move on from this heartbreak (though she seemed a lot more prepared for it than we were), but a single Alison is a much more interesting character to have in play as The Perfectionists moves forward. Should she start hooking up with anyone this semester? Absolutely not, but in the long run, having Alison's love life to play with is too juicy to pass up. I'm putting it out there that I would not hate a future Alison and Mona romance. They're the only two who can understand each other's twisted flaws.
For the moment, we need our own glass of wine though. This one is going to hurt for a while.
Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists airs Wednesdays at 8/7c.
