So That The Middle Spin-Off Isn't Happening After All

Way to kick off the holiday season with a broken dream, ABC

The Middle ended in May after nine seasons but there were hopes of it kinda sorta living on through a spin-off centered around adorkably awkward daughter Sue Heck (Eden Sher) titled Sue in the City, which sounds like the wonderfully goofy series the world needed. Sadly, those dreams were crushed on Thanksgiving no less, since ABC announced Wednesday evening that the series would not be going forward.

Varietysays that the series, which would have Sue moving away from Indiana to pursue a career in Chicago, got axed as ABC shuffled priorities and projects in the midst of big changes. It was recently announced that ABC's entertainment president Channing Dungey, who presided over a period that saw American Idol's return and the Roseanne debacle, has stepped down.

All hope for Sue isn't lost though: Deadline says it may be shopped around, and who knows, it could possibly end up at Freeform, as ABC did with the black-ish spin-off grown-ish, where Yara Shahidi's character Zoey moves away and goes to college.
