The West Wing alum Bradley Whitford has just joined The Handmaid's Tale in a major recurring role in Season 2, and we're already conflicted about his character.

Whitford will play Commander Joseph Lawrence, the architect of Gilead's economy. He is described as "gruff and intimidating, with a disheveled mad genius vibe." If you're expecting to hate this guy strictly because of where his allegiance lies, think again. His character description also says that his "sly humor and flashes of kindness make him a confusing, mysterious presence for his newest Handmaid."

Is anyone else getting flashbacks to his character in Get Out?

There's no telling who his newest Handmaid could be, but Whitford's casting could give us a hint about Marisa Tomei's mysterious Season 2 role. Bruce Miller told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that Tomei would be playing the wife of a commander, so one has to wonder if Whitford could be playing her husband.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 premieres April 25 on Hulu.
