The Handmaid's Tale Cast Speaks Out Against Anti-Abortion Laws in Powerful PSA

It should come as no surprise that The Handmaid's Talecast is willing to step up to the plate to protect a woman's right to choose.

Partnering with Planned Parenthood and Harper's Bazaar, the series' stars have come together to film a PSA in which they take a stand against the wave of anti-abortion legislation that has been proposed or enacted across the country. Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Bradley Whitford, and others participated in a short video explaining why they believe access to legal and safe abortions is a constitutional right for women, and why attempting to deny them access has created a national health crisis.

"This is not Gilead. This is not The Handmaid's Tale. This is not a book. This is not a TV show. This is America. This is our reality," the cast said. "When we start restricting access to abortion, our country takes one step closer to Gilead. And we cannot let that happen."

This PSA comes after several states, including Ohio, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama, have passed laws that would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for most women to receive a legal and safe abortion. Given that The Handmaid's Tale deals directly with issues of forced motherhood and denial of bodily autonomy rights, this kind of political issue seems right up the show's alley, making its cast the perfect people to speak out about the matter.

New episodes of The Handmaid's Tale debut Wednesdays on Hulu.
