HBO programming president Michael Lombardo confirmed Thursday that Deadwood is coming back for a movie.

Lombardo told TVLine that he gave creator David Milch the green light to write a script for a movie to be produced by the network.

"David has our commitment that we are going to do it," Lombardo told TVLine. "He pitched what he thought generally the story line would be -- and knowing David, that could change. But it's going to happen."

How accurate are fact-based dramas?

The Western cult favorite aired from 2004 to 2006 and was canceled before it got a satisfying conclusion. There have been talks of a movie for years, and credible rumors had been growing in recent months, and now it's confirmed: Ian McShane will swear again as Al Swearengen.
