Thursday's episode of The Blacklist featured a near-fatal red herring, an unexpected return and definitive proof (we think) about who is Elizabeth Keen's (Megan Boone) father.

After torturing Alexander Kirk's hematologist, Dr. Reifler (Matt Servitto) in the church where he's been squatting, Red (James Spader) finds out that Reifler is scheduled to meet with Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen) within 24 hours to give him his next treatment. So Red and the doctor head to Geneva, leaving Liz behind in the church.

Meanwhile, Tom (Ryan Eggold), acting on a tip from Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff), goes to meet with a local station chief who had previously obtained intel on Kirk. While Liz is awaiting word from Red, she gets a call from Tom, who tells her that the lead paid off and he believes Kirk is in Russia - even though a raid on his safe house that morning turned up nothing. Putting two and two together, Liz frantically calls Red and Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) to warn them that they're walking into a trap in Geneva - and no sooner does she convey the information than a car that's just pulled into the warehouse where they're waiting bursts into a massive fireball.

The Blacklist boss reveals what's ahead for Mr. Kaplan

So, who tipped Kirk off? Reifler correctly points out that he was in Red's presence the whole time, so unless he spoke some secret code to Kirk, that's unlikely. Red's main suspect is actually Liz herself - he observes that, while her phone call did save his life, the two of them clearly have very different objectives when it comes to Kirk. The tension between them only grows when Liz confronts Red with a DNA report that was in the file Tom obtained from his source, proving once and for all that Kirk is her father and that everything Red has told Liz is a lie. Red doesn't deny her accusations - but he doesn't cop to them either, and earlier in the episode he notes that he doesn't "accept the premise" that Kirk is Liz's father. Hmmm...

Meanwhile, back at the post office, Laurel Hitchin (Christine Lahti) returns to help the team take down a serial killer who's targeting inventors. Ressler's outraged that she's back - and perhaps rightfully so, as she promptly turns the information she gets from Cooper (Harry Lennix) over to Red. What could he possibly want with it?

Elsewhere, Aram's (Amir Arison) girlfriend — whose name is Elise and who apparently has difficulties operating household appliances — calls Samar (Mozhan Marno) of all people (didn't she resign last week?) to get advice on planning the perfect date for Aram, to make up for flooding his apartment after a dishwasher mishap. Samar swallows her pride and gives her some pointers, but notes that something about Aram's girlfriend rubs her the wrong way. How much of this is due to jealousy is unclear, but I'm with Samar on this one.

Sadly, the only mention of Mr. Kaplan this episode was Dembe telling Red he's finding it impossible to forgive himself for his role in what he believes to be her death. For now, I guess we can assume she's still chained to that bed.

The Blacklist airs Thursdays at 10/9c on NBC.
