MTV has renewed Teen Wolf for a second season, the network announced Wednesday. The hourlong drama will return with 12 new episodes in 2012.
"We're incredibly proud of this show. Executive producer Jeff Davis has brought an exciting, cinematic story to life with a breakout young cast who our audience has wildly embraced," MTV's Head of Programming, David Janollari, said in a statement. "Picking up Teen Wolf for a second season marks another step towards the further diversification of our schedule, with this big, bold, entertaining scripted series."
A darker take on the 1985 Michael J. Fox film of the same name, Teen Wolf stars Tyler Posey as Scott McCall, a high school student and newly bitten werewolf who must try to maintain a normal life while keeping his secret under wraps. The TV adaptation was developed by Criminal Minds creator Davis.
The series premiered in June to 2.17 million viewers and has been averaging 1.69 million in its Monday at 10/9c timeslot. Teen Wolf's renewal comes weeks after MTV's decision to cancel Skins, another one of its high-profile new dramas of 2011.
