CW Boss Reveals Why It Was Time to End Supernatural

It was a 'heartbreaking' conversation

Megan Vick

It's a painful fact that's still hard to accept: Supernaturalonly has one season left. After 15 years, the Winchesters are going to hang up their demon hunting gear. But it wasn't a decision that was made easily.

On Sunday, CW head Mark Pedowitz told journalists at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that there was a long conversation about whether Season 15 would be the right time to end the show.

"All I can tell you is Jared [Padalecki], Jensen [Ackles], Peter Roth of Warner Bros., and myself had a very, very long sad, heartbreaking discussion, and we all came to understand what the guys want to do. They wanted to go out still relevant. They wanted to go be with their families. They wanted to go see what else was in the world," Pedowitz said. "I [have] said this many times, when they were ready to stop, we would stop."

The heartbreaking news doesn't end there, though. Pedowitz was also asked about whether it's a priority for The CW to launch a spin-off of Supernatural before it officially goes off the air. And, in short, the answer is no.

"I've been involved with two spin-offs that did not connect," Pedowitz explained. "We have had no further discussion whatsoever of a Supernatural spin-off. I tend to believe, at this point, the show's essence and blood is Jared and Jensen."

Basically, soak up the final season while you can, because it will probably be the last new Supernatural content we ever get.

Supernatural Season 15 premieres Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
