Supernatural Stars Preview Cas and Dean's Big Reunion

Castiel's first attempt at hunting on Supernatural was a cartoonish comedy of errors — and that was with his angelic superpowers! So how will it go now that Cas is human? "Now you just have an awkward human being with Dean, whose very comfortable in these shoes and totally understands walking into a crime scene. But you get awkward boy over here doing it all wrong," Jensen Ackles tells TVGuide.com. "It makes for some good comedic moments."

Supernatural showrunner on Sam's new guardian angel

Even though viewers can expect a few laughs when Cas (Misha Collins) and Dean (Ackles) team up to take down a murderous angel in Tuesday's episode, don't expect everything to be like old times. The former angel still bears some resentment at Dean for kicking him out of the Men of Letters bunker a few episodes back. "First of all, Cas is pissed at Dean and rightfully so," Collins says. "He's feeling a bit jilted for having been thrown out on his butt."

Dean is also harboring "a fair amount of guilt at sending [Cas] packing," according to Ackles, but the actor explains he only did what was necessary to preserve the secret of Sam's (Jared Padalecki) possession. "Obviously he'd much rather have Cas around," Ackles says. "The family that Dean knows is very, very small and getting smaller." And while Dean is forced to leave Sam at home with Kevin (Osric Chau) for this caper, Ackles says working this case with Cas is the first step in finding a way to reintegrate him into their lives.

Supernatural Cheat Sheet: What to expect in Season 9

Working as a sales associate at a Gas-N-Slip, Castiel is actually starting to embrace human life — though he still hasn't quite figured out how to work the Slushie machine. But when he notices a string of strange murders, Cas calls up Dean for help investigating. The case is a bit of a trial run for Cas, who's trying to determine whether he wants to follow the Winchesters into hunting full-time or settle into a normal human life.
"He's basically trying to figure out whether he can fit in as a human, whether this is really fulfilling in and of itself just being human," Collins says. "I think he feels that he feels he failed so desperately as an angel that this is a new beginning for him and he can really start over and look for fulfillment as a human."

Though Cas might not have powers when he goes hunting this time around, he will be just as clueless. In fact, Collins says we shouldn't expect Cas to savvy up any time soon. "Because now he's human that brings with it a whole new set ... of things that he has no experiences with," he says. "So, his naïve bumbling quality is only exacerbated by his humanness."

Even so, we can only hope he's at least learned a more subtle bad cop routine.

Supernatural airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
