Supergirl won't be the only crime-fighting force in National City this season.
"James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick," Kreisberg told a small group of reporters. "He's going to decide to become a vigilante. He's going to become Guardian, complete with the shield."
Olsen followed up the announcement by posting the first photo of James in the new Guardian outfit to his Instagram account. This is definitely an updated look from the comic books.
In the comics, Guardian was a Metropolis police officer named James Harper who took on the role of a masked vigilante in order to take down the criminals he couldn't arrest during his day job. The character was notable for having no superpowers, but did use the aforementioned indestructable shield. The character of Col. Jim Harper was introduced during the first season of Supergirl and is part of the nefarious organization known as Cadmus.
Of course, as Arrow's Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) knows quite well, becoming a masked vigilante isn't without complications, and it can wreak havoc on one's personal relationships. And because James decides not to tell Kara about his new nighttime activities, she's obviously not going to be too pleased once she finds out.
"It's going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara," says Kreisberg. "She has her own feelings about vigilantes. It becomes a push and pull of who gets to decide who gets to be the hero."
However, at least one member of Team Supergirl doesn't seem to share Kara's issues. Winn (Jeremy Jordan) is going to step in, more than likely to help with the uniform and to create comedy gold.
"[James has] recruited Winn to help him. Winn is his man in the van," says Kreisberg. "He takes this job at the DEO and then is lying to everyone about how he's spending his nights because he's going out with James. [He's lying] about why he's exhausted and coming in with a black eye. He says he walked into a door. That's sort of the fun and excitement of filming these first 10 episodes."
What do you think about this new direction for James?
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
