Super 8 nabbed the No. 1 spot at the box office in its first weekend, grossing $37 million, Box Office Mojo reports.
The sci-film from J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg outpaced last week's top film, X-Men: First Class, which ranked second with $25 million. The Hangover Part II came in at No. 3, earning $18.5 million and crossing the $200 million mark.
X-Men: First Class debuts on top but falls short for franchise
Kung Fu Panda 2 attracted $16.6 million to place fourth. Following at No. 5, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides drew $10.8 million and also crossed the $200 million mark. Bridesmaids earned $10.2 million to come in sixth.
The weekend's other major new release, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, grabbed just $6.2 million to debut at No. 7.
Rounding out the top 10: Midnight in Paris (No. 8, $6.1 million), Thor (No. 9, $2.4 million) and Fast Five (No. 10, $1.7 million).
