Star Trek's Anton Yelchin Dead at 27

The actor was best known for his work as Pavel Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise

Anton Yelchin, best known for his work as Pavel Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise, has been pronounced dead at the age of 27.

According to TMZ, Yelchin was found at his home in the Los Angeles area around 1 a.m. Sunday, pinned between his car and a brick mailbox in what authorities are ruling a freak accident for which no foul play is suspected. The vehicle's engine was still running when they found the actor, and with the car in neutral on a fairly steep incline.

Before become a star in films including Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Green Room and voicing Clumsy Smurf in The Smurfsfilm franchise, Yelchin got his start on TV. A guest spot on Curb Your Enthusiasm led to more roles, including turns on Law & Order: Criminal Intentand Huff, where he played the son of Dr. Craig Huffstodt (Hank Azaria) for two years. He was set to take on a role in Mr. Mercedes, the miniseries based on Stephen King's book, which premieres in 2018.

Born to a pair of Russian figure skaters in 1989, Yelchin is survived by his parents and uncle Eugene Yelchin, a children's book author.
