Star Trek: Discovery Adds Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones

Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones have joined the crew of Star Trek: Discovery, CBS announced on Tuesday.

Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, a astromycologist and Starfleet science officer who also happens to be an expert on fungus. This marks Rapp's first starring role in a television series. He is best known for his work on Broadway, where he originated the role of Mark in Rent.

Jones will play Lt. Saru, another Starfleet science officer who is a new alien species in the Star Trek universe. The actor, who has a background in contortionism and mime, is best known for his work under prosthestic makeup, appearing as otherwordly creatures in Pan's Labyrinth, The Strain, Falling Skies and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Star Trek: Discovery: Everything you need to know about the new series

Rapp and Jones join Michelle Yeoh, who will play Captain Georgiou, the leader onboard the Starship Shenzhou. Discovery's main character, a female lieutenant commander, has yet to be cast.

Star Trek: Discovery is set 10 years before the original Star Trek series and will debut its premiere episode on CBS in May. The drama will then move exclusively to CBS' digital streaming service CBS All Access.
