Was it who you expected?

Star's midseason premiere, titled "Rise From the Ashes," wasted no time in unveiling who died in the fire that severely damaged Carlotta's salon.

At the top of the hour, we learned that while Cotton (Amiyah Scott) survived Omari's (Justin Marcel McManus) attack and Jahil (Benjamin Bratt) lived through that cocaine overdose, it was Simone's (Brittany O'Grady) girlfriend Karen (Imani Lewis) who perished in the flames. Plagued with guilt, Simone recalled how she suggested Karen sleep at the salon temporarily until she found a more permanent home. Unfortunately, her idea proved to be a deadly one and now the aspiring superstar will have to move forward without her friend and romantic partner.

Meanwhile, Carlotta will have to deal with the legal fallout from the blaze, which has now been ruled a homicide thanks to Karen's death. Even worse, she's being looked at as a suspect since her name was on the insurance and business wasn't exactly booming before the fire.

At least she has Miss Bruce (Miss Lawrence) to lean on for support now that the besties are finally back on good terms. Plus, Carlotta's hustler mom Christine (Patti LaBelle) and outlandish baby sister Cassie (Brandy Norwood) finally made their way to town to offer their help in getting Carlotta's business back on track -- though they appear to have ulterior motives.

Things didn't fare any better for Carlotta's daughter Cotton who, while still alive, now lives in constant fear of what her menacing ex-boyfriend will do next. In an effort to control her, Omari has threatened to kill her remaining friends and loved ones if she doesn't do what he tells her. Given that he already murdered Elliot in cold blood and nearly drowned her in the bathtub, it's safe to say he means business.

See how it all unfolds when Star continues Wednesdays at 9/8c on Fox.
