So You Think You Can Dance Replacing Mary Murphy with Paula Abdul, Jason Derulo

Plus: Details on the new twist!

Longtime judge Mary Murphy has left big shoes to fill with her departure from So You Think You Can Dance. So big, in fact, that Fox has hired two judges to replace her.

Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo will join Nigel Lythgoe at the judges' table for Season 12, Fox announced Thursday.

This will be the third Fox reality show Abdul has judged. The singer-dancer-choreographer was an original judge on American Idol and later judged The X Factor. She also appeared once as a guest judge last year on SYTYCD and was a permanent judge on SYTYCD Australia.

Scoop on returning winter shows

While Derulo is best known as a pop star, he also has a background in tap dancing. Derulo even showed of his knowledge of dance last year when he guest-judged on SYTYCD.

In addition to the new judges, Season 12 will also introduce a new twist: stage dancers vs. street dancers. Throughout the auditions, the dancers who advance will be placed into either the stage dancer team or the street dancer team, each overseen by an All-Star mentor. As the show progresses, the judges and mentors will eliminate dancers until the Top 20, which will be comprised of 10 street dancers and 10 stage dancers. The Top 20 will then be challenged to perform a variety of styles, with one dancer from each team being eliminated each week.

SYTYCD returns in the summer. What do you think of the new judges and twist?
