Sleepy Hollow's midseason finale saw a big victory for Abbie and Ichabod -- but at what cost?

In order to defeat Moloch, Jenny suggests Irving (Orlando Jones) use the Sword of Methuselah in the hopes that it's fatal effects would be nullified since he already sold his soul. Unfortunately, the former police captain still became the first of the Sleepy team to fall in battle.

TV's most heartbreaking deaths

"I knew pretty far in advance," Jones told on Sleepy Hollow's North Carolina set. "I knew he was going to die. I didn't know how. I didn't know he was going to die fighting the second Horseman. And I did not know about what I like to call the Ram-bro get-up with the sword and shotgun."

The sacrifice of his life is only the latest selfless deed Irving has carried out since discovering the impending End of Days in Season 1, but Jones says it was his character's recent incarceration that did the most damage to Irving's psyche. "He's kind of been abandoned to some degree. I think Abbie comes once. Ichabod maybe comes once to see Henry, but for the most part he's going it alone. So I think that there's got to be a fair amount of resentment," Jones says.

"If your own family doesn't care about you, or doesn't seem they do, and your friends have abandoned you, I think that leaves you in a certain kind of mental state where you go, 'Sure. Sword. Kill the bad guy. Okay, cool.' Who's going to mourn ultimately?"
