When most people think of summer, they generally think of carefree days spent basking in the sun. But if that's not your vibe, HBO is here for you with the first trailer for Sharp Objects, its latest murder mystery mini-series from Big Little Liesdirector Jean-Marc Vallée.

Starring Amy Adams and based on a book by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, who scripts the limited series with Dietland's Marti Noxon, Sharp Objects is a disturbing, gothic mystery about a journalist Camille (Adams) who returns to her small Missouri hometown to report on the murders and mutilations of two young girls. Camille, who was only recently released from a hospital stint for self-harm, soon finds herself getting too close to the case, making it difficult to separate her objective reasoning from her emotional investment.

Further complicating things for Camille is her off-kilter relationships with her estranged mother Adora (Patricia Clarkson) and teenaged half-sister Amma (Eliza Scanlen), whose troubling behavior sparks Camille to take a tough look at her own upbringing and personal demons.

Chris Messina also stars as a hot cop, Det. Richard Willis, but there is far too little Messina in this trailer for our liking. At least fans of the book know that we should all expect much more Messina in the actual series.

Sharp Objects premieres Sunday, July 8 on HBO.
