Talk about the worst news ever! Freeform announced today that Shadowhunters has officially been cancelled, and the show will come to an end after wrapping up its third season.

Shadowhunters is currently on a mid-season hiatus, and it will return for 12 new episodes in 2019 and get the suffix Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt. A two-hour finale will serve as the series finale.

"We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite," the network said in a statement. "However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending... We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama."

Showrunners and executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin addressed the cancellation on Twitter, expressing their sadness over Freeform's decision to end the show.

"We are sad to see Shadowhunters come to an end. If it's any solace to the fans, the episodes to come are truly some of the best of the series. Thank you for all the support," Swimmer said.

"Shocked and saddened. So proud of this show," wrote Slavkin

This is tragic. What will we do without our weekly Malec fix?!

Shadowhunters will return in 2019 on Freeform.
