[Warning: The following contains spoilers for the Season 3 premiere of Animal Kingdom]
It's official, Animal Kingdom killed Baz (Scott Speedman) in its Season 3 premiere. The TNT drama will spend the summer reeling from the loss and forcing its characters to deal with the devastating consequences, but on the other side of the TV universe, Grey's Anatomy fans are jumping for joy.
Speedman made a one-episode pit stop on the ABC hospital drama as transplant surgeon Nick Marsh in Season 14 and fans have been clamoring for his return ever since. He spent all of his scenes with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and their chemistry was off the charts. Even Meredith admitted that he made her feel things she hadn't felt since Derek (Patrick Dempsey) died. The episode also ended with the implication that her new McDreamy was on the way. In the Season 14 finale, Meredith goes into a super funk because everyone around her is falling in love and she feels marooned on her island of single-dom.
It has been two full seasons since Derek died on the show and Meredith has only had one mentionable romance. She on-and-off dated Nathan Riggs (Marin Henderson) throughout Season 13 and part of Season 14, before he was written off the show late last year. Riggs was a great addition to the show but he definitely didn't bring the light out in Meredith the way that Derek did. The show has spent adequate time showing Meredith mourning the love of her life and proving she doesn't need a romantic interest, but she's more than earned the right to want one — and it should be Nick Marsh.
The only question for TV viewers was could Speedman make the jump if he was still committed to Animal Kingdom? Grey's also said goodbye to two series regulars, Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw, at the end of Season 14. That was after the show lost Jeanine Mason to The CW's Roswell, New Mexico pilot in January. The big openings in the Grey's cast leave a lot of room to incorporate Speedman into the fold.
Basically, the stars are aligning for Meredith to get another big love. We're voting for Nick (and Speedman) to return to Grey Sloan Memorial and it seems the universe agrees. What else do you need, ABC?
Grey's Anatomy returns to Thursdays at 8/7c this fall on ABC. Animal Kingdom airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on TNT.
