Joshua Malina has been promoted to series regular for the second season of ABC's new hit series Scandal, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

In Shonda Rhimes' new drama, Malina portrays U.S. Attorney David Rosen, whom Olivia (Kerry Washington) frequently went toe-to-toe with during the first season. Though Malina appeared in all seven episodes in Season 1, he was only considered a recurring player.

Scandal Postmortem: Who is Quinn Perkins, really? Shonda Rhimes sounds off on Season 2

Rhimes recently told TVGuide.com that there's a possibility that Olivia will get a new love interest in Season 2, but would not confirm nor deny whether that could be David. However, Washington believes they're better off as sparring partners.

"There's a lot of pressure about that on Twitter," Washington recently told us. "A lot of people are feeling that, but I don't know. I feel like he's such a good nemesis and an intellectual lover, in a way, that I'm not sure we want to consummate that."

For his part, Malina was all for a romance between David and Olivia. "Even my wife would be fine with that!" he said.

Henry Ian Cusick is Scandal-less for Season 2

Malina's promotion follows the news that Lostalum Henry Ian Cusick will not return for the second season.
