Sam Champion Leaving Good Morning America for The Weather Channel

Good Morning America's Sam Champion is leaving ABC to be the managing editor and "on-air face" of The Weather Channel, ABC News president Ben Sherwood announced Monday. Ginger Zee will take over Champion's duties at ABC.

Good Morning America's Sam Champion is leaving ABC to be the managing editor and "on-air face" of The Weather Channel, ABC News president Ben Sherwood announced Monday. Ginger Zee will take over Champion's duties at ABC.

"Sam has broadcast live from a raft floating between polar icebergs, danced the salsa on 'Despierta America' and interviewed countless newsmakers, celebrities and chefs," Sherwood wrote in an email. "While he is leaving ABC News, he will always be a part of our family."

Champion, 52, also tweeted about the news on Monday. "Only an amazing opportunity like this at @weatherchannel cld take me away from my @ABC family of 25 yrs and @GMA #blessedlife," he wrote.

Champion joined WABC in 1988 and Good Morning America in 2006. GMA will celebrate his last episode on Wednesday.
