In the hours that the Duchess was in labor, bookies in Britain took 50,000 bets on what the famous couple would name the child, according to the Associated Press. The most popular royal boy names have been James, Alexander and George, following King George I-V and King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II's father. His Royal Highness is now third in line to the throne. One British tabloid, The Daily Star, reported back in April that the baby would be named after the Prince's grandfather, Prince Philip.

It's a boy for Prince William and Kate Middleton!

Other popular names of British monarchs include Edward, Charles, the name of Prince William's father, and Henry, which is also the full name of Prince William's brother, Prince Harry.

Researchers at the family history website Ancestory.co.uk found that John was the most popular name in both mom and dad's families. William is the second-most popular name in Middleton clan, and the third-most popular in the royal family, according to British newspaper The Mirror. However, The Mirror also suggested some more unusual names from the family tree, such as Lancelot, of which there are five in the royal lineage.

The craziest celebrity baby names

In the hour following the birth announcement, Clarence House, the Prince of Wales' private office, tweeted: "We will try to read as many messages sent to @ClarenceHouse as we can - thank you for your messages so far."
