What Does John Goodman's New HBO Role Mean for the Roseanne Spin-Off?

John Goodman ain't wasting no time

Lindsay MacDonald

John Goodman ain't wasting no time crying over spilled Roseanne milk!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goodman has booked his first post-Roseanne cancellation role in an HBO pilot comedy, The Righteous Gemstones. The series will star Vice Principals' Danny McBride, who will also pen the script, executive produce, direct the pilot.

The series tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family "with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work." Goodman will star as Eli Gemstone, the Gemstone family patriarch, who is described as an unbending man with his own award-winning weekly television program centered on his aggressive salvation techniques. McBride will play his son, Jesse, a maverick who's somehow always caught in his father's shadow.

Roseanne Spin-Off The Conners Is Officially Happening!

It's unclear whether this role will prevent Goodman from being a large part of ABC's Roseanne spin-off, The Conners. Deadline reports that the cast of Roseanne all signed new contracts upon The Conners' pickup, though there's no details of exact episode commitments for any of them. Should The Righteous Gemstones get ordered to series at HBO, we can only hope the shooting schedules for the two shows don't conflict enough to reduce Goodman's role in either series.

The Conners is set premiere Tuesdays this fall at 8/7c.
