Robert Downey Jr. Pardoned for Drug Conviction by California Governor

Robert Downey Jr. has received a pardon for the 1996 drug conviction that sent him to prison, the Associated Press reports.

The office of California Gov. Jerry Brown announced on Thursday the pardon of 91 people, and Downey was among them.

Downey was convicted of felony drug possession in Los Angeles County after he was arrested with cocaine, heroin and a pistol in his vehicle. In 1999, he was sent to prison for nearly a year after violating his probation.

While the pardon does not erase the record of conviction, it restores voting rights and is a public acknowledgement that Downey has demonstrated "exemplary behavior," according to the governor's website.
