Riverdale Casts Archie's Biggest Threat for Season 3

It's not Hiram

We have been heading into Riverdale Season 3 worrying about Archie (KJ Apa) being able to handle himself in jail after Hiram (Mark Consuelos) framed him for murder at the end of Season 2 -- but now we should probably be worried about Archie having to stay in jail.

The Riverdale producers announced that they've cast Penelope Ann Miller (your parents definitely know who she is) as district attorney Ms. Wright. As an outsider, Wright doesn't have the same golden boy next door impression of Archie that the rest of the town does. She's there to make an impression and make sure she wins her first case, which means putting Archie away. Her official character description says, "she will weave together disparate moments of Archie's young life to portray him as a dangerous, violent sociopath who is capable of committing a heinous crime."

If any of you are out there actually thinking, "But what could she use to make Archie look bad?" let's do a quick recap of Archie's biggest mistakes over the past couple seasons that he wouldn't want resurfacing in this murder trial: the Red Circle video, delivering Jingle Jangle, the Red Circle video, leading a riot against the Ghoulies, the Red Circle video, being best friends with the leader of the Serpents, oh and did we mention the Red Circle video? I legitimately can't wait to for the footage of Archie with his masked, shirtless bros looking like a group of homicidal Chippendale strippers to be played in open court. Riverdale, never change.

According to the cast and producers, the town will rally around Archie but he's going to have a hard time overcoming his rash, teenage mistakes to convince this new prosecutor and the jury that he didn't do what Hiram has framed him for doing. Can he pull it off without losing everyone around him?

While Archie is facing new threats, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is going to get a family reunion. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed at the show's Comic-Con panel on Sunday that Jughead's mom Gladys and Jellybean Jones are coming to Riverdale in Season 3. Fans should expect them to show up around Episode 8 and casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

Riverdale returns Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
