Ricky Gervais to Host Golden Globes

For the first time since 1995 the Golden Globes ceremony will have a master of ceremonies: funnyman Ricky Gervais.

"I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down," Gervais told TheWrap.com.

"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free rein as a host," he added.

NBC executive Paul Telegdy described Gervais as "one of the funniest people on the planet" who has provided "some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent memory."

"His unique comedic style will enhance the only awards show that brings together television and film stars to celebrate entertainment's biggest night of the year," Telegdy said.

This year's Globes nominations will be announced Dec. 15, and the show will air live on NBC on Sunday, Jan. 17.
