Teresa will serve 15 months while her husband Joe was sentenced to 41 months. "For a moment I thought about probation ... but I think a period of confinement is absolutely necessary in this case," Judge Esther Salas said in court on Thursday, according to the magazine. "I don't honestly believe that you understand or respect the law. I need to send a message. In the eyes of the law it doesn't matter who you are. There are consequences to pay."
The couple, who have appeared on the Bravo reality show with his wife since Season 1, will be able to surrender themselves. Teresa will serve out her prison sentence first so that at one parent can care for their four daughters. "My daughters are my life. I'm more sorry than anyone will ever know. I will make this right no matter what," Teresa said in a tearful statement before the court early Thursday afternoon. "I'm really scared ... I need to learn to do things for myself. It's time for me to wake up."
In addition to his 41-month sentence, Joe was also sentenced to another 12 months on an additional count, which will be served concurrently. He will also get two years probation and will be forced to pay $414,000 to Wells Fargo bank as well as $10,000 in fines. He was also recommended to enter an alcohol treatment program in prison.
The judge also said that said that immigration services will not act on Joe's deportation case until after his sentence is served. "I stand here humiliated," Joe said in a statement before his sentencing. "I disgraced many people including my wife and my four daughters. I take full responsibility for my actions. I promise to be a better person."
The couple was first charged in July 2013 with a 39-count indictment that alleged conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications and bankruptcy fraud. They originally pleaded not guilty to all charges, but changed their pleads to guilty in March.
Their ongoing legal troubles have been covered extensively on the current season of the Real Housewives of New Jersey.
